Akhtar Hossain Choudhury Memorial Degree College has been established in 2002 by Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Altaf Hossain Choudhury, former Home Minister and Begum Suraiya Akhtar Choudhury after the name of their only son- Akhtar Hossain Choudhury (24) in their native villege-Kathaltoli with a view to spread the light of modern education to this remote area. It is located by the side of Bakergonj-Borguna Road, 13 k,m south from Bakergonj and 16 k.m north from subidkhali. It started functioning on 1st July, 2002 with 321 students in science, Humanities and Business Studies Group under The Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education, Barisal 60 students in BM Course under Bangladesh Technical Education Board. It has 6 two- storeyed Buildings including-Boys’ hostel, Girls’ hostel, Teachers’ dormitory and Principal’s Quater. By the time the college has earned reputation of being one of “Top Ten colleges” 03 times regarding H.S.C result and by receiving- `Prime Minister Award` (1st Price) ” for Tree Plantation in 2006.” Opening Hon’s courses in 5 subjects is in processes. All though the college is founded by a political leader, it is absolutely a non-political institution. It is also a smoking free Campus.
